The Secret to Developing Professional Caliber Hamstrings

Have you ever seen pictures of IFBB bodybuilder Tom Prince when he was in the premiere? He's a 270-pound animal, great for bodybuilding scenes in the late 90s. But he has something that no other body can build. His back is leaping from behind his upper legs like a bicycle. Most top bodybuilders today do not have a good level of hamstring development. Maybe because of the ridiculous development of quadriceps there are athletes today. Probably because of today's drugs (growth hormone, insulin, and IGF-1). Maybe it's something else.

Why is it that guys like Tom Prince have incredible hamstrings and guys like you have average hamstrings? Let's look at a few factors.

Genetics

First, we must remember that genetics is the key to everything in bodybuilding. The guys you see at the professional bodybuilding level are among the top 1% of genetic specimens on planet Earth. It is very possible that they are not trained, most of them still have better hamstrings than you will, having trained them for many years. As Ronnie Coleman once said, if you want a muscle like mine, you have to die and come back better genetically!

Year of Experience

Remember that most are 25 to 35 years old, and they have been training for 15 to 20 years. They have always been good at bodybuilding, and for the most part, they have been stuck on a consistent basis, if only because they are getting attention from the people around them for it.

Leaving The Quads Alone

Many professional bodybuilders train quads and hamstrings on two different days of the week, or they split days into morning (quad) and afternoon (hamstring) exercises.

At The Gym Twice As You Are

This guy lives in the gym. Most of them hit each body part twice a week, which gives them twice the stimulus / rest / growth cycle of each part of the body you enjoy. You may train each body part once a week. Many of them doubled, and sometimes hit every part of the body three times a week as the show approached.

Set, Set, and Set More

At most, you may train your hamstrings with 8 to 12 sets. Most top professional body builders will only train them for hours with friends. Ninety minutes of hamstring, and call it a day. This may consist of 20, 30, or 40 sets. Your schedule and recovery may not allow it.

Rest

If your job title is a "professional body builder", chances are you have the ability to sleep, and day to day sleep. Many of us do not have such a blessing!

Anyway

You will never experience Tom Prince, no matter how hard you train, and how much you want. But you can have the most amazing set of obstacles in your office, your gym, or your local bodybuilding show. Set realistic goals. You won't be disappointed if you launch a website about brain surgery, but still don't know how to do lobotomy. Similarly, do not be disappointed if after many years of training you do not experience professional quality hamstrings. There are many factors that build them, and the only thing that matters is that you have the best hamstring you can afford.
