Heal Your Brain Using Mindful Meditation

Awareness-based stress reduction therapy has been shown to reduce anxiety in a variety of clinical populations, as reported by the University of Ottawa. Meditation reduces stress and enhances forgiveness, according to a study published by American College of Health Journal. Meditators have a greater ability to moderate their emotional intensity during stressful situations, says the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

Studies from Yale University and Washington have shown that attentive meditation improves your brain levels of GABA, DHEA, melatonin, serotonin, HGH, and endorphins. Meditation effectively counteracts the effects of depression by reducing the levels of cortisol stress hormones.

Because meditation enhances beneficial brain chemicals, this is an easy way to combat the effects of depression. It reduces stress, relieves depression and anxiety, and lowers your blood pressure, according to research published by the National Institute of Mental Health.

GABA (Gamma Aminobutyric Acid)

GABA is an important neurotransmitter found in the central nervous system. It inhibits the production of stress-producing hormones, such as cortisol.

Insufficient amounts of GABA in the body are associated with tension, anxiety, insomnia, and epilepsy. GABA supplements help to correct mood disorders.

Adequate levels of neurotransmitters are essential for proper brain function. In a Yale study, scientists found that people with panic disorder or addiction had a significantly lower GABA.

Studies show that people who meditate or use binaural entrainment daily have significantly increased GABA levels. Researchers at the University of California argue that meditation produces the effects of reducing anxiety by promoting the action of GABA in specific areas of the brain, through mechanisms similar to the effects of synthetic anti-anxiety and soothing agents.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone)

DHEA is a hormone found in the adrenal glands. Research shows that DHEA can have several health benefits, including:

  • reduce depression

  • controlling sleep

  • reduce stress

  • improves memory

  • increase sexual power

  • improve overall psychological health

DHEA deficiency is associated with obesity and chronic fatigue, as well as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Meditation has been shown to significantly increase DHEA levels in the body. According to a study published in Malaysia Biological Psychiatry, DHEA-treated patients experienced significant improvement in their depression, as well as improved memory performance.

Melatonin

Melatonin is an important hormone produced by the pineal gland located in the brain. Melatonin levels increase in blood at night, allowing for better sleep. It is also a very powerful antioxidant. Studies at the Washington School of Medicine have found that there is a significant relationship between low melatonin levels and weight gain, especially around the abdominal area.

Low melatonin levels hinder your ability to get enough sleep. Lack of sleep increases the production of hormones such as leptin and cortisol. Too much of this hormone causes you to lose weight, while making it difficult to lose weight.

Careful meditation practitioners have been found to have melatonin levels above average, according to a study published in Biological Psychiatry.

Serotonin

Serotonin deficiency can lead to many physical and psychological issues, such as:

  • obesity

  • depression

  • mental disorder

  • insomnia

  • narcolepsy

  • sleep apnea

  • migraine headache

  • premenstrual syndrome

  • fibromyalgia

Serotonin is an essential neurotransmitter required for proper brain function. Serotonin improves mood and improves energy.

Many medications for mood disorders work with increasing serotonin levels. People who meditate have increased serotonin levels in their body.

Endorphins

Endorphins are neurotransmitters created in the body to relieve pain internally. Endorphins are responsible for increased pleasure and overall well-being. They also lower blood pressure and are believed to fight cancer.

People who intentionally practice conscious meditation have been found to have significantly higher levels of endorphins. In addition to meditation, exercise also improves endorphin levels, resulting in the pleasant feeling you get after exercising.

Human Growth Hormone (HGH)

HGH supplements are becoming more and more popular, although the risk of taking HGH in additional form is widely debated. HGH is responsible for facilitating growth during childhood, and it retains your organs and tissues throughout your life.

As we get older, our ability to produce HGH gradually decreases. This in turn causes increased body fat, decreased motivation, decreased muscle mass and general body weakness. Research shows that meditation can lead to increased levels of HGH.

Cortisol

Cortisol is a pressure hormone produced by the kidneys. Increasing the amount of cortisol can accelerate the aging process, and in the long run has been linked to these diseases:

  • belly fat is increasing

  • chronic stress

  • high blood sugar

  • weak brain function

  • decrease in muscle mass

  • decreases bone density

  • high blood pressure

  • thyroid function is suppressed

  • heart attack

  • stroke

  • bad cholesterol increase

  • good cholesterol decrease

Conscious meditation has been shown to reduce cortisol levels in your body. A study published in History of the New York Academy of Sciences In 2004 it was found that older women who regularly practice meditation may have a reduced cortisol response to stress, and the more women practice, the less likely they are to respond to stress with high blood cortisol levels. In another study conducted at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, 52 men experienced decreased cortisol and reflexes after undergoing Buddhist meditation.
