Understanding The Endocrine System

The endocrine system is made up of gland cells that produce and release hormones that help regulate vital body functions. The main parts of the system are: adrenal glands, parathyroid, ovaries, hypothalamus, pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid, thymus, testis and more.

Endocrine problems are common

Like other parts of the body, the endocrine system is also affected by the disease. These conditions are caused by various causes such as:

  • Disease
  • Issues with the endocrine feedback system
  • Failure of endocrine glands to stimulate other glands to release hormones. For example, you may have problems with the hypothalamus that interferes with the production of hormones in the pituitary gland.
  • A genetic disorder
  • Infection
  • Tumor
  • Injuries to the endocrine gland
The most common are:

Cushing's disease : This is an excess of the production of pituitary gland hormone which results in activity of the adrenal gland. In some cases, Cushing's syndrome occurs in children taking high corticosteroid medications.

Adrenal insufficiency : This occurs when the adrenal gland releases too little of the hormone cortisol or aldosterone. When you suffer from adrenal insufficiency, you tend to experience stomach aches, fatigue, skin changes, and dehydration. One of the most common conditions caused by adrenal insufficiency is Addison's disease.

Gigantism : You are said to suffer from Gigantism when the pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone. Due to excess hormones, bones grow at an incredible rate.

Hypertension and hypothyroidism : As you might expect, you will experience hypertension when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. When you have hypertension, you experience weight loss, sweating, nervousness, and rapid heart rate. In most cases, hypertension is caused by Grave's disease. It's an autoimmune disease.

Hypothyroidism in turn causes the thyroid gland to fail to produce enough thyroid hormones. When experiencing this condition, you tend to experience dry skin, depression, fatigue, and constipation.

Hypopituitarism: You have this condition when the pituitary gland does not produce enough hormones or produce too small a hormone. This condition is caused by pituitary gland disease.

Polycystic ovary syndrome : This condition is characterized by excessive androgen production that interferes with the development of the egg and the release of female ovaries. Experts report that this condition is one of the causes of infertility.

What to do when experiencing endocrine conditions

When you have this condition, you should visit an endocrinologist. When you visit a doctor, he or she will conduct several tests aimed at determining the level of hormones in the urine and blood. In some cases, you will need to run some imaging tests that will help determine the location of the tumor that may be there.

In conclusion

Here's what you need to know about the endocrine system. If you experience chronic fatigue and weakness, you should visit an endocrinologist who will undergo several tests and recommend the best treatment options.
