The Medicinal Properties and Benefits of Turmeric

Research and studies into turmeric curcumin have been carried out using turmeric extract containing curcumin at a very difficult level from food and spice alone. To get the most out of it, you need to take supplements that contain the right levels and curcumin formulas.

It has been found to be a natural anti-inflammatory, giving the same properties as some prescription drugs, with no side effects. Inflammation actually serves to help the body fight off foreign bodies and help repair damage but if the inflammation is long-term, it can attack the body's defense. This is why anti-inflammation is so important.

Curcumin is also a powerful anti-oxidant. Free radicals cause oxidative damage which is believed to be behind the aging process and many diseases. As an anti-oxidant, curcumin not only blocks free radicals but also helps boost the body's antioxidant production capacity.

There are several types of arthritis that most commonly involve joint inflammation so logically following curcumin will benefit the sufferers of this painful disease. Studies have confirmed that the symptoms of arthritis increase with curcumin of turmeric and with rheumatoid arthritis, it is actually more effective than the prescribed anti-inflammatory.

Studies also see curcumin as a way of treating depression. Although the study was small, the results were promising, showing results similar to Prozac. Similarly, studies have been conducted to see whether curcumin can be beneficial to those with brain diseases and age-related diseases related to brain function. Both depression and Alzheimer's disease have been associated with decreased levels of BDNF (a neurotropic brain factor), a growth hormone in the brain. It has been found that curcumin can actually increase BDNF levels which means it can help delay or even reverse age-related brain disease. There are also signs that curcumin can help cleanse Amyloid plaque, one of the causes of Alzheimer's disease. As inflammation and damage to oxidants are known as part of this disease, which curcumin also fights, it is possible that future research into curcumin may find a way to reverse the damage caused by Alzheimer's.

Heart disease has also been linked to the benefits of curcumin and while heart disease is extremely complex, curcumin can help reverse some of the effects of heart disease. In addition to inflammation and oxidation that are part of the process of heart disease, ongoing studies have shown additional benefits associated with many factors of heart disease.

It's strange but interesting that something most of us often think of as cooking aids can actually have a lot of benefits to our health.
