Genetically modified foods, or genetically modified organisms (GMO's) are now part of your diet whether you know it or not. If you eat corn, corn flour, corn, corn oil or other corn based ingredients, soybeans, soy milk, tofu, soybean oil and other bean-based products, canola oil, cotton seed oil, papaya sugar, papaya from Hawaii, and yellow squash, then genetically modified foods produce a significant percentage of your overall food intake.
More than half of all Americans surveyed said they had no idea they were consuming this GMO and if they knew it, they wouldn't. Many expressed shock at the fact that they were unaware that they had swallowed these highly questionable items and that they may have been unwell. The simple reason we don't know is because in the United States food and food manufacturers (food?) Are not required to tell us that food has actually been altered at the DNA level. In contrast, many other countries claim that GM foods are clearly labeled as such.
Foods are genetically modified by incorporating genes from several other species into the DNA of the food. Almost two-thirds of all products on your local warehouse shelf contain at least one genetically modified (modified) element. When engineers manipulate food crops to make them produce their own insecticides, or make them resistant to chemical poisons that kill other plants, genetically modified organisms will never occur in nature.
The question is: Is this GMO food safe for human consumption? The rational answer to the question so far is the author is NOT. At best, it should be noted that no one has any idea of the possible health problems associated with eating the food. While there are many warnings about health risks from its own scientists, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration decides to allow genetically modified foods to market without labeling or safety testing. Genetically modified seeds that are the result of such manipulations are now being grown commercially so by this time the majority of soybeans, corn, cotton (oil), and canola (oil) you have purchased are genetically modified, and you will have none ways to find out which products are and which aren't because there is no law that requires them to be labeled as such.
Studies on mice have produced evidence that should alert consumers to the possible dangers associated with GM foods. Mice that were corn were genetically modified compared to their parents who were fed corn that was not genetically modified. Rats fed GM foods produce signs of kidney and liver problems, as well as heart and spleen problems. Parents who are not fed GM food do not seem to have significant problems in this area. Other studies conducted on GM-fed test mice have produced evidence of a variety of health problems. At this time, we really can't tell you all the health problems that can cause this food, as we are the mice in which the experiment was conducted.
In my personal opinion, other than the evidence that we are headed for a very slippery slope, it is my instinct that scientists at all times change the God-given source of food, that this manipulation brings together problems with it. I am personally convinced that the Creator God is doing everything perfectly, but if you are a believer that all things have evolved naturally, then even if it is true, scientists have no business changing the nature of creation. In my view and based on my belief, scientists certainly cannot, and will never improve on God's creation and we have no business manipulating the food we eat at the DNA level. Of course from a health perspective nothing good can come from this.
Steps to Avoid GMOs
1. Only buy products labeled 100% organic, or products that are certified organic because they cannot intentionally contain any GMO ingredients.
2. Find a product that carries the "Non-GMO Project Seal."
3. Avoid products such as corn and corn products, soybeans and soy products, canola (oil), cottonseed (oil), sugar beet, Papaya Hawaiians, zucchini and yellow squash if they do not hold 100% organic labels or do not carry Seal The NON-GMO project.
4. Do not use dairy products from cows injected with cow growth hormones.
It is up to the individual consumers to be aware of this dangerous problem and take precautions to ensure that they and their families are not at risk by genetic engineering of our food supply. It only takes a small percentage of people who refuse to buy genetically modified foods to affect the size of the largest food company. When major food businesses begin to see that GMO offers are not paying off, they will begin to pull this dangerous food off the shelf, or at least begin to clearly mark modified foods.
Since there is absolutely no regulation on GMO exposure in the market, or any regulation on their sales, we as consumers must take initiative and effect radical changes in the big food business as usual. Greed and its bottom line will continue to be the only concern for major food companies and governments have historically been easy to buy, so your family's health and well-being will continue to be the least of all. Recognizing the sad truth that big food businesses and the government are willing to sell your health for their benefit, we must stand up and say NO to genetically modified foods in the market. Make your voice heard by refusing to buy the products listed above if they are not clearly labeled organic or if they do not carry a Non-GMO Project Seal. We must stand together and stop this madness before it continues to grow. Please do your part and make your voice heard.
