It is no coincidence that the high rates of hypertension, diabetes and obesity in the West coincide with the increase in this product.
In fact, two specific processed foods, a product that has dominated the entire food group, are now clearly associated with obesity and high blood pressure. They are hydrogenated, or trans-, high in fat and fructose sweetener. These weird people might call "Frankenstein Foods" an example of science fiction.
For their commercial benefit, hydrogenated fats have found abundant processed foods. Almost everything that can contain oil or fat - bread, cakes, cakes, "spreads", and sweets - stands to "benefit" from this fat addition.
Fat fats undergo a process that turns liquid oil into solid fat. We know this material is most commonly used as margarine. Food manufacturers have been attracting public attention by emphasizing the association of "fructose" with fruits. Fruit contains no fructose but is not the same substance as high fructose syrup, mostly corn syrup, which is used in the food industry.
High fructose syrup is only now being exposed to health risks and few people recognize the seriousness of the problem. High fructose corn syrup is cheaper than sugar cane and many times sweeter. The results are not surprising; High fructose syrup is literally everywhere in foods processed from soft drinks to spaghetti sauce. Even cola drinks have been using high fructose corn syrup since the 1980s.
Like hydrogenated fats, fructose sweeteners also increase belly fat, more than conventional sugars. The result is a dangerous condition called "metabolic syndrome". Obesity, impaired insulin metabolism, high cholesterol and hypertension are all results. Moreover, fructose sweeteners have the potential to damage the liver as they pass through the small intestine through the small intestine where they are directed straight to the liver.
Hydrogenated fats and high fructose syrups should be given special attention because of their global use and dire consequences. Fortunately for us, awareness of this threat is increasing and the use of high fructose corn syrup may one day be restricted due to trans fats.
