A common theme among many professionals today is that they tell you to do long and tedious cardio exercises to lose fat. "Get to your target rate and stay there for at least 30 minutes," they said.
Well, if all the "experts" who have told you over the past few decades have been right and true is wrong?
As more research is done, we finally find out the truth about what kind of training we need to do.
That kind of training is called time interval training.
Exercise interval alone intense exercise followed by short rest periods.
Let's take a sprint hill for example. Let's say there's a 50-foot hill in your house. You start at the bottom, sprint to the top (intense exercise), then walk back down (short rest period). You then rinse and repeat the process.
So what are the benefits of interval training compared to long cardio exercises?
1) It Takes Time - Interval training can last as long as normal, but not necessary. Because you will put more effort into each training period, you will not be able to maintain a very long training. Usually 10-15 minutes is a lot for beginners or intermediate levels.
2) You dramatically lower your heart rate - When I first tried interval training, my heart rate was around 66 beats per minute - a bit lower than average but not quite in the "brilliant" range. After about 2 months or so my heart rate was around 50-55 minutes, which meant that my heart was in an elite state. Like any other muscle, your heart becomes stronger as it recovers. As it recuperates over time, you will begin to notice dramatic differences in your heart beat.
3) You're Older - With traditional cardio you lose fat because you burn it while you work. However, after you do your metabolism you really do not stay "high" as you are exercising. Over time, even if you don't burn a lot of calories current Exercise, you can burn more fat throughout the day. You really burn fat because you're sleeping!
4) You Don't Lose Muscles - With traditional cardio, you need to have a perfect nutrition plan so you don't lose muscle. In many cases, even a perfect nutrition plan won't help. However, with interval training you release HGH (Human Growth Hormone) which means your body is gaining more muscle and losing fat. Why do you think runners have muscular bodies like marathons that are all skin and bones?
5) You Can Join Programs - It is likely that you are currently doing a weight lifting / cardio program. Well, if I told you that you can get the same benefit in less than half the time? One exercise I like to do is this: First, I jump rope as fast as possible for 50 reps on both legs, then 25 times on the left foot, then right. Then I did it again. Next, I went in and did squats and gray work to catch my breath. Then I did a set of vertical jumps. Then he returned to the jump rope. This is a lower body workout exercise that I do in about 12 minutes.
You can plan training exercises remotely from what you are doing. Remember, all you have to do is quickly get your heart rate down, then lower it again. Do this a few times and you're done.
No longer do you have to go to the gym for a few hours in the end, wasting your time. No longer do you have a reason why you can't exercise. All you need is about 10-15 minutes and you can get a very frustrating workout. Just be creative and have fun.
