October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but we don't have to wait until this month to implement preventive measures. So I want to share some tips that can help reduce your chances of developing breast cancer.
There are 1 in 8 opportunities for developing breast cancer in your life, but hopefully with this plan it may change. Although there are many medicines on the market and a lot of research is being done, the chances of getting cancer throughout life are not shrinking.
It seems that diet has a lot to do with the management of this disease and it's something that we can definitely control. Diet has proven to be the most effective way to reduce your risk. There are many other suggestions like exercise but today we will focus on 10 simple ways you can change your diet and start protecting yourself today.
1. Reduce your fat - Limit your fat intake by 20 percent of your overall calorie intake. Research has shown that a high-fat diet will increase the risk of breast cancer. High fat diets have also been shown to produce chemicals in the intestinal bacteria that are converted to carcinogenic estrogen. These estrogen can then be stored in breast fat tissue, making the cells in the area more vulnerable to cancerous growth.
2. Choose Crunchy Veggies - Eat lots of crucial vegetables such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, radish and cauliflower. It is best to fish them or eat them raw to preserve the best cancer nutrients. These types of vegetables contain sulfuric compounds called indoles, which help to remove estrogen from the body and prevent it from inducing breast cancer growth.
3. Increase Your Fiber - Get lots of fiber from foods like vegetables and fruits, nuts and grains. Fiber tends to interfere with estrogen metabolism and reduce estrogen levels. High levels of blood estrogen in the body are almost always associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. High fiber diets have been shown to reduce breast cancer risk by up to 54 percent.
4. Try Seaweed - Try eating seaweed such as kelp and nori or consider taking spirulina (blue algae) and chlorella in a glass of juice daily. High intake of kelp may explain the lower incidence of breast cancer among Japanese women. Chlorine and chlorella have shown anti-carcinogenic effects.
5. Soy Secret - It's wise to eat soy products like tofu, miso or tempeh. Soybeans and other soy products contain plant estrogen called genistein. The plant estrogen binds to the receptors in the breast, making it impossible for cancer to cause estrogen to form in the breast cells.
6. Buy organic - Buy organic foods such as fruits, vegetables, meates, dairy and cereals whenever possible. Organic products do not contain pesticides associated with breast cancer. Organically certified dairy and meat products do not contain any growth hormones, such as bovine, a chemical commonly fed to cows. These chemicals have been shown to promote the growth of breast cancer cells.
7. Fish Eating - Eat at least 3 servings of cold water fish a week. Some cold water fish are tuna, salmon, halibute, cod and sardines. If you can't eat fish, you can take fish oil capsules or vegetarian supplements. Omega-3 oil prevents the effect of a compound known as prostaglandin. Prostaglandins have been associated with inflammation that would hinder the immune system's ability to identify tumors. Increased consumption of fish and fish oil has been found to reduce cases of cancer.
8. Choose the right oil - Avoid canola oil, safflower oil, sesame oil and margarine. It is best to use virgin olive oil and extra during cooking. The flax seed oil is also very wise to use while it is not heated; can be added to cooked food. Olive oil, single unsaturated fat has been associated with lower cancer rates. Trans fats also called hydrogenated oils found mainly in margarine have been associated with high rates of cancer.
9. Add phytonutrients to your diet - Introduce beans, peanuts, seeds and fruits and a variety of vegetables to your diet. Certain foods contain phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are plant compounds that protect against cell damage and prevent cancer growth. Cooking with herbs such as dill, which contains phytochemicals called limonene, is essential for breast protection and rosemary has antioxidant and anti-tumor properties.
10. Mushrooms - Mushrooms have medical properties. Some medical mushrooms include various Japanese shiitake and maitake mushrooms. Studies have shown that maitake mushrooms actually stimulate immune function and inhibit tumor growth. The ingredients in maitake mushrooms do not kill cancer cells directly, they activate the body's immune system against breast cancer. Shitake mushrooms are also found to boost the immune system.
