Some anti-wrinkle creams out there contain GABA. Is that a good thing? Is GABA really an important ingredient in anti-aging creams? Or is it something that only adds to the cost of the product?
What is GABA?
GABA is short for butyric gamma amino acids, non-essential amino acids that naturally occur in the body and function to prevent, from stimulate or stimulate, response. Due to its relaxed nature, GABA is effective in:
- treats anxiety and sleep disorders
- improves mood
- secretion of human growth hormone (HGH)
- soothe the nervous system
Precautions and Side Effects
Side effects of GABA (as a dietary supplement) are rare and usually temporary. Some users report feelings of dizziness, drowsiness, and shortness of breath. However, GABA supplements should be taken carefully by people with liver or kidney problems. If you are pregnant, your doctor may advise you not to take the supplement. Always be in a safe place, consult your doctor before taking GABA supplements, or alternative medicine for that matter.
GABA and Skin Aging
However, GABA may not be the solution for skin aging. It has a relaxing nature of the muscles that does not make it effective as a topical solution for reducing wrinkles. Manufacturers of wrinkle creams with GABA may try to disprove this, but to date, no studies have proven that GABA works in the same way as Botox that names the muscles that cause wrinkles. So claiming that GABA works to reduce wrinkles (even if they are true) is not supported by sufficient clinical studies.
Curly Curls With GABA
Just so you know, here are some of the top choices of anti-wrinkle creams that contain GABA:
- Dr Brandt Crease Release. It is said to bring immediate results that may or may not be due to GABA content. It contains a combination of other ingredients including Green Tea and White Tea, Sweet Pea and Hialuronic Acid, which even without GABA, can still provide some anti-aging protection. However, consumers love the fact that almost after use of the product, the skin becomes smoother with fewer lines and wrinkles.
- Freeze 24-7 Immediate Treatment Made Instant. This product has GABA and (interesting) orchid extract. To apply, simply take a small amount and gently massage the target area in a circular motion until the cream is completely absorbed by the skin. Then you will see the wrinkles start to decrease.
- DERMAdoctor Immobile Lines Relaxer Line Immediate Topic. In addition to GABA, this product contains CoQ10 which stimulates collagen production, Japanese Green Tea Extract which helps fight aging by protecting the skin from free radical damage, and Hyaluronic Acid which acts as a humectant, enhances moisture so that the skin looks full and not dry. It is hypoallergenic and non-irritating, making it safe to use near areas where the lines tend to be clearer.
GABA can be an effective adjunct to epilepsy, sleep disorders and anxiety. Perhaps, increasing your natural GABA supply can also help delay some of the signs of aging as it helps you sleep better and handle stress better. You can do this by consuming foods containing GABA, such as beans, seeds, soy, whey, cereals, and seafood.
But whether or not you want to use anti-wrinkle cream with GABA is entirely up to you. Remember, it is not clinically established that GABA works to relieve muscles that are most likely to be affected by wrinkles, so focusing on products with clinically proven ingredients that have proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles may be considered smarter.
