How Effective are Oral Hyaluronic Acid Supplements?

There are similar paradoxes when dealing with injections versus oral supplements. Many people prefer to take oral supplements rather than have an injection given. However, the effectiveness of the injection has been shown to be greater than that of oral supplements.

Part of the reason hyaluronic acid is so effective is that it has a very large molecular weight, which reflects its ability to hold water, and thus its great moisturizing power. When HA is injected, the absorption of heavy HA molecules is easy to maintain - which is not always possible when oral HA supplements are taken.

Many scientists agree that the stomach has a hard time absorbing heavy HA molecules. A source from the University of Connecticut Medical University explained, "The hyaluronic acid itself is not absorbed when taken orally and so its use is currently limited to injections."

Meanwhile, some commercial sites that boast HA molecules are chemically enhanced for oral supplements, which have lower molecular weight, and thus have a more absorbable time.

The paradox is that these oral supplements may be safer than injections, and HA will have an easier time absorbing - but - if you lose the molecular weight, you lose a lot of the benefits that are so unique to HA. After studying the potential side effects of an injection with a doctor, many people can conclude that the injection offers the greatest cure.
